Sputnik the Band "The Lost Cause Commandos" AMAZING! TOO FUNNY! THAT'S COOL! Catchy hooky indie rock tune.
It's great to be associated with the legend of the "Volkswagen on the Roof" placed on top of the High School in New Jersey. The story has been the continuing source of discussion and rumors since the day the car first appeared on the high school front roof. The major New Jersey newspapers announced it on their front pages. The school principle announced it on the school public address system. The school newspaper recorded the news. An underground newspaper thrived on the topic. The car later appeared in the cafeteria for the senior breakfast and ultimately on the gymnasium roof for our outside graduation. In the years following, tributes have been printed in local newspapers from time to time including a cartoon honoring the memory. A few years back, I was encouraged to write the book "No-Parking Zone - Stories of the Car on the Roof" that describes their high school antics and is now in hundreds of homes.
Two members of the musical group Sputnik the Band attended the Historical Society library presentation. They told me at the time they felt inspired and sensed there was a song to be written. Now five years later, we have this exciting announcement that Sputnik the Band has written and recorded a new song inspired by and featuring the "Car on the Roof" story. The leader of The Commandos nickname was Father Leaman and my group of friends called ourselves "The Lost Cause Commandos."
Legend has it that the reason they got away with this caper was because their getaway van had the slogan “Jesus Saves” on the side of it and so the police didn’t bother them…
Sputnik The Band all met in a music scene in the Lower East Side of New York after the drummer Nigel Rawles and a producer heard a track written by the band's songwriter and vocalist Genie Morrow called Sputnik (Song for Laika)” which was written about a cute little dog who was sent to outer space by the Russians.
They recorded the song and took the name for the band.
Mic Rains joined the band playing guitar along with Pemberton Roach on bass (both of which had a hand in producing), and Joe Drew joined on trumpet completing the lineup once and for all.
The band has albums 333 and The Lew Bracker Album both produced by Carl Glanville (Keith Richards, U2, Frank Sinatra) along with earlier releases under their belt and is currently working on an upcoming album set to drop this summer.
Although "See You In Mendocino" speaks volumes for the band, to get a full understanding of their sound, thier other releases are a must hear.
Their music is available for streaming and download on all major platforms and the band is excited as they ramp up for their album.
