With the release of the Overkill EP, Mitchell Leonard delivers a cinematic and ambient rendition of a 1982 classic.
The release features "Overkill (up)" and "Overkill (down) which both give an impactful aesthetic but at different tempos and keys.
"I’ve always loved this song, ever since I first heard it coming out of the single-speaker shelf radio in my dad's garage. Nowadays, I find it describes much of the anxiety I feel over putting art out into the world. It’s a lonely road that’s easy to get lost on.
What I’ve been realizing when performing it on stream over the last few years is how its lyrics are also relevant to today’s experiences of isolation and mental overwhelm.
Sleeplessness, overthinking, disconnection, the exhaustion of constantly processing information with no breaks - this is where I live, along with most of the people I know," explains Mitchell of the single and what it means to him.
Mitchell Leonard is a Brooklyn-based composer, producer, and conceptual artist known for
exploring the intersection of music, animation, and narrative stories, creating immersive experiences that
blur the lines between mediums.
His approach to performance is outside-the-box and he finds himself performing live on Twitch to find audiences.
"I've been doing them for a few years now, and have been able to utilize that type of performance to really play the kind of music that takes a lot of gear (that would be impractical to haul around to gigs) in front of a live audience. They help me audition new ideas, get instant feedback, and develop these songs over time," says Mitch.
Mitchell finds himself able to evolve and grow as a composer and performer with the Twitch platform and continues to do so.
"session operators", a single released on the Overkill EP, was born out of Leonard’s live stream performances on Twitch, during which he mused that he and the other streamers weren’t just performing—they were guiding their
audience through emotional and sensory landscapes, shaping their experience in real-time. This concept
extends beyond live-streaming. It’s a lens through which all art can be viewed - whether it’s painting,
sculpture, film, or literature. Every artist is, at their core, a session operator: building worlds that their
audience inhabits as they engage with the art.
The Overkill EP is available for streaming and download on most major platforms and Mitchell has uploaded segments of his Twitch streams on YouTube where you can also find his full music videos.
Mitchell is available for interviews upon request.
