With the release of the Voltaic Landscape Zero EP, Tetsuya Hori delivers a unique set of orchestral, cinematic and sonically driving compositions that break boundaries musically and showase the composers love for the craft.
"I actually composed the first draft of this piece during the Covid pandemic in 2021. At the beginning, I had planned to form a trio with a saxophone player, a DJ and myself, but for various reasons the project fell through. After that, I left the piece alone for a while, but I felt a strong desire to complete this piece in the spring of 2023. I thought I needed a new partner to complete this project, and I came up with 1605munro, a musician I've known for a long time and with whom I've collaborated before. He has a lot of experience as a musician and works in a variety of genres, so I thought I could complete this project with him in the right way. Then we began polishing this piece in the fall of 2023.
Several people were involved in this piece until it was completed, but special mention goes to Eric Horstmann from Immersive Lab (www.immersive-lab.com) who was responsible for the Dolby Atmos mix, and Arnaud Braibant (https://www.instagram.com/arnaud.braibant) who created the fantastic artwork. They made this project even more exciting," explains Tetsuya of the record.
Born in Sapporo/Hokkaido in Japan, Tetsuya Hori found his true calling as a composer that specializes in reaching outside the box and working with collaborators and fellow musicians writing pieces for instruments, vocals, electronics and objects as the instrumentation of solo, ensemble, chamber and orchestral music.
After studying at Showa University of Music, I moved to Berlin in 2003 where he resides and composes. In 2003 Tetsuya began composing for live electro using the software Max and since has found a love for composing and working with electronic music as he incorporates this into his pieces.
Over the years Tetsuya has received much praise and acclaim as a composer winning awards, scholarship programs and more.
The Voltaic Landscape Zero EP is a testament to his approach to composition and his open ended, freeing style enabling him to release music with less boundaries than the norm.
"Before this project, I have mainly composed for various orchestras and ensembles as a contemporary music composer, and have never composed music like this piece, but I have long been interested in working with analog synthesizers. But I thought that if the synthesizers are used like wind instruments together with a string orchestra, it could work like a normal full orchestra overall. I think it turned out to be worked well,'" says Tetsuya.
Voltaic Landscape ZERO, Pt. 2 advanced to the first voting stage in the category "Best Instrumental Composition” of Grammy Awards 2025.
The EP is followed by a full album release dubbed Variations and both are available for streaming and download on most major outlets.
