With the release of the Never Going To Fit In album, MERCHNTS. take a fresh approach to bending genres by combining heavy handed rock with elements of hip-hop and create sounds all their own.
This record had its conception during my early 20s when I was struggling with a lot of identity and self esteem issues and trying to figure out who I was. I had friends that felt the same way too and I was always a good listener so the lyrics became a bit of a diary of the experiences and feelings that my friends and I were going through. I can proudly say I'm much happier and confident with who I am as a person but these lyrics are for the people who don't feel comfortable with who they are or where they're from. This record is a reflection of my history and my way of saying "I know how you feel".
I'm also just a dude from the suburbs of The Gold Coast Australia where everyone is either a surfer or sports fan and I was just an emo kid who casually skateboarded and liked art, film and gaming so I didn't really fit in with my hometown. This record is also something I wanted to be able to look back at when I'm 40 and be proud that I got out of my own way and insecurities and released an album that I'm proud of and not care what people think because I know my friends can relate to this record, " explains drummer and songwriter Liam Chapman.
MERCHNTS. is the brainchild of drummer, singer, and songwriter Liam Chapman who, after performing as a drummer with bands on tour and in the studio, decided to put together a record of his own.
I'm going to be completely honest but I didn't know I was writing a record (let alone putting my voice on a record) until I had wrote my 4th song in 2020 and recorded these songs in 2021. This record all started as an idea in 2018 then it shifted into another idea... Then another idea... Then another idea... Then practicing... Then another idea and then I realised all of my songs resolved around the theme of struggling to fit in with friends, family and my hometown.
I didn't know if I was writing singles, an EP, an album but the truth is I was just "figuring it out as I went". MERCHNTS has a very messy and unorganised history but a lot of bands and artists have started similarly too - and that inspired me to keep going and expanding upon my ideas until something felt right. This record is an example that some origin stories aren't always quick and simple. MERCHNTS has been a product of multiple Rebirths since 2020 but now I'm at a point where MERCHNTS and my artistic direction feels good," says Liam of the record.
It seems Liam has found the sound he has been after and the album is a testament to where he is at with it all right now.
Never Going To Fit In is out on all platforms now and Chapman is already working on new material for upcoming releases.
