With the release of the Sidewalks EP, Brian Ross blends genres together to create a sound familiar, but all its own. Laced with addictive progressions, a youthful honesty, and plenty of pop undertone, the record boasts the aesthetic of folk rock anthems.
The first single, “XYZ" grabs you with it's infectious and lush sound and passionate vocal performance along with it's breathing arrangement.
"XYZ is about being in love not only with a person, but with the feeling of being in love as well. It's about loving how these feelings make you wanna live, and give you a reason to get up in the morning. It's about loving the suspense and the unknown of the situation just as much as the person themself. It makes you nervous and afraid, but in an exciting and daring way, like going on a rollercoaster and not seeing the drop until you've reached the highest point. You're kind of in pain, but that's part of the fun." explains the songwriter of his single.
Although the single speaks volumes for the EP, to get a real understanding of where Ross is coming from, the full record is a must hear.
"Over the course of making this EP, I started to realize that I really just wanted to evoke emotion from the listener. I wanted to make it personal to me, while also allowing whoever is listening to feel like I'm speaking directly to them. The whole point of this album is to tell a full story, with a firm beginning and end, and to leave the listener feeling satisfied. It was almost like I was taking everyone who listened to this album on a journey with me, and when it ends it's meant to feel bittersweet (which is the entire theme behind the final song "Goodbye", a bittersweet finale song)" says Ross of the meaning behind the EP.
Brian Ross got his first taste of performing in the sixth grade production of Mary Poppins where he played Michael Banks. Shortly after, he performed "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5 in a school competition. From there he stuck with it and his love for music and performance grew stronger.
Picking up an acoustic guitar, he began to write songs and over the years, developed a love for the craft. Using his life experiences and emotional platform to write, Ross found his sound.
The Sidewalks EP is a testament to where he is at right now musically.
As Ross himself says, "No matter what I write, I want it to have some sort of significance in my life, to make sure it still feels authentic."
The Sidewalks EP is available on all major streaming platforms and the artist is always working on new material for the near future.
